E-Commerce

On figure images to be used on a website to sell clothing are typically called “E-commerce.” The exact style will vary from brand to brand, but are typically consistent across the website. The models face may or may not be shown, and any movement or expression will be minimal so as not to distract from the clothing.

Editorial

Images to be used on the splash pages of websites, for advertising, or on Social Media are called “Editorial.” With editorial images, the goal is to evoke a feeling. You want your customers to identify with or admire the model and lifestyle. They can be shot in studio or on location, and are often propped and show more expression.

Two ways to shoot product images of garments

Pinning

Pinning is the traditional way to photograph garments without a model.  This technique offers clean lines and in some cases is able to show more detail in a single image than it’s counterpart.  For instance, the pinning image allows the T-back to be seen here, whereas on the mannequin shot, the back is obscured from view.

Mannequin

The primary advantage of mannequin photography is that it illustrates fit similar to the garment being on-figure, but with the convenience of working without a model.  Retouchers remove the mannequin in post production to provide a clean image that reflects fit.
